Does the Dyson vacuums really work?

I own a Dyson and although it is great for picking up pet hair, at almost every other level it is an appalling contraption, cannot overide rugs, will not pick up small bits preferring to push them around the room. The hose ,oh! that bloody hose arrangement, must have been designed to drive us bonkers and why do they have to have that horrendous appearance?

I have it narrowed down between the DC 15 and the DC 17 and have not found any difference other than the price. The DC 15 is 50 bucks cheaper. Is there another style that I should consider? Does anyone have either of these vacuums. Thanks for the help
